Bias for Action: A competency that will help you achieve your goals

In our previous article, we’ve talked about why having the competency of Initiative and Bias for action is important and how can you develop it. Bias for action is one of the key competencies that is crucial in order to achieve your goals. However, like any other competency or habit that you’d want to be strengthened and developed, you need to have consistency. But because of the never ending and overwhelming demands of this fast-paced business world, some of us may have a hard time being consistent in cultivating and strengthening this crucial competency.

This article will give you 3 tips on how you can strengthen and be consistent in developing the competency of Bias toward action.

Tip#1 Step out of your comfort zone

If you happen to have ideas that require you to do something you’re not familiar with, just do it even if you’re hesitant. Not only will your knowledge and skills improve but your commitment to finish what you have started will grow as well. When doing tasks that are out of your comfort zone, you will feel the need to finish them because the risks of not being able to finish them is higher.

Tip#2 Set your priorities and stick to them

Having a bias for action is great and all but without control, this competency will become a disadvantage to you. Having too much on your plate may cause delayed projects, mediocre results and exhaustion on your part. You might be the type of person who is eager to act on every opportunity presented to them but, to achieve your goals and create great results, you need to weigh things out, prioritise them and stick to what is already on your plate until you finish it. Once you’re with one project, then that’s the time you can proceed to the next one.

Tip#3 Learn to strategise

Any sports enthusiast would know that in order to have high chances of winning, you need to have a game plan. The same idea applies to any person, team and organisation. For you and them to achieve your goals, you need to know how to best utilise you talents, competencies and resources. And to do this, you need to strategise.

Make it a habit to strategise and create a ‘game plan’ in every project you’re assigned to do. Do not just walk straight into every open door, but take a look at what’s on the other side first before entering. Learn how to calculate the risks on every ‘opportunity presented before taking action. Be sure to give a thought on how much can you benefit from that opportunity presented.

Developing a bias for action is one thing and strengthening it is another. It is not enough that you just possess this competency; you also need to know how and when to use it. Misusing it will only be to your disadvantage and can hinder you from achieving your goals and creating greater results.
