How Do You Become an Inspirational Leader?

leader inspiring his team

Fear, anxiety, depression. These are some of the emotions that we encounter the most during the CoVID-19 pandemic. It has affected our lives in a big way, and these emotions can really take a toll in a person’s attitude, especially towards work. For example, one can feel unmotivated, which will then lead to a lousy performance resulting in poor quality of work.

Seeing your people lose interest in their work will make you think of your performance as a team leader. Ask yourself this question: What actions did you take or not take for them to feel disheartened towards their job? If you don’t have a clear answer, maybe it’s time for you to step up and become an Inspirational Leader.

An Inspirational Leader is a kind of leader that inspires, guides, and mobilises individuals and groups. They articulate a clear, compelling, and motivating vision for the future of their organisation. This person is also the kind of leader that walks the talk to show and inspire their team to work harder and with joy.

If you want to be an Inspirational Leader, here are some tips that you can do to develop this competency.

Develop a clear vision

Have a clear vision for the future of the organisation. Articulate this vision in a way that inspires, motivates, compels, and mobilises others to want to achieve it.

Challenge the status quo

Be creative. Come up with fresh perspectives, and innovative, breakthrough ideas.

Have a Role Model

Know what you admire in a leader, develop your own personal definition of meaningful, inspired leadership, and model the way.

Establish an open communication

Openly discuss high-level issues with your team, seek substantive input, share credit, and create opportunities for ownership in the vision.

Think big picture

Don’t micromanage. Give capable team members latitude to move things forward.

Be trustworthy

Maintain your credibility and integrity at all times or else you won’t be given the opportunity to lead.

Once you’ve developed the competency of Inspirational Leadership, you’ll be able to:

  • Articulate and stimulate enthusiasm for a clear, compelling vision.
  • Have the ability to bring people together; step forward to lead as needed, regardless of position.
  • Create a sense of belonging in a group, creating an emotional bond or spirit that makes people feel they are part of something larger than themselves.
  • Challenge the status quo, inspire a shared vision, empower others to act, set an example (“model the way”) and “encourage the heart”.
  • Articulate a sense of common purpose beyond the day-to-day tasks, making work exciting, and inspiring others to follow.
